Comment on Atheist Ireland and the Proselytism of Non-Belief by grneyedmonster

I'm not a member of Atheist Ireland - let Mick Nugent answer you directly on the ideas behind that organization - but I'm guessing that it's not so much that they are trying to "convert" believers to atheism as it is that they have to fight for their own right to disbelieve. I have found that is helpful to have some knowledge of religious writings to be able to refute those believers who would try use those writings to disparage me for my disbelief.

Believers often ask 'how can you reject god if you've never read the Bible?' It is generally easier to take the teeth (such as they are) out of a believer's argument against atheism if you can point out contradictions in their "holy" books and point out passages of interest of which most self-professed Christians are unaware. Most believers I've met were indoctrinated into their religions as children and tend to shy away from looking at their religion with a critical eye. I try to encourage these folks to take a closer look at their prejudice against the term "atheist" and to scrutinize their own religious beliefs. The trick is to be polite and do not let a friendly discussion degenerate into a heated argument. I never bring up my atheism unless someone else opens a religious discussion with me. I mean, really, what kind of person goes around introducing herself by saying "Hi, I'm an atheist" or "Hi, I'm so-and-so; have you accepted Jesus as your savior" (unless you're one of those door-to-door folks)?

If believers leave me alone and do not attempt to impose their viewpoints upon me or my children, I will not bother them - I don't care what they believe. It is only when my civil rights are threatened or when my atheism is ridiculed that I am spurred to action.

I just realized how long this response is. Sorry! :-)

[...] Speaking of artists that I have been following from relatively early stages in their careers, the first time that I saw St. Vincent, she was a solo support act for The National, who nervously introduced herself as Annie Clark from Texas. That was 2007. The second time was in the slightly unusual setting of The Sugar Club, where she had a touring band with her and produced a better insight into her talent. I still recall Paris Is Burning from that show as being utterly awesome. [...]

Hey Larry (the) Langer!

Aye, the crowd chatter was poor enough, even at the front. However, as it happens at nearly all shows, I only draw attention to it when I find it really irksome. Gotta have some variety in my reviews! At the same time, the Vicar Street show (at the risk of banging on about it) was really quite silent, as I remember it.

If John Spillane's poem gave us a laugh and you guys liked it, then that's a win-win outcome! ;-)

Josh is a great perfomer, regardless of who's on stage with him, what pissed me off about that gig though was the incredible din of people talking throughout.... it was only noticeable on the slower mainly solo acoustic songs that josh played, you say the marquee wasnt suited to an orchestra, if everyone had shut the hell up it most certainly would have been. i just dont get why people pay 40 euro plus to go in and have a chat for themselves... just so they can go and tell their friends they were at a gig in the marquee and look fashionable... and as for you and your cork remarks...John spillane is a true hero and his poem was fantastic..... dont mock things that you dont understand..... ya langer.
