The Wisdom of Kids

I do not plan on writing many personal entries here, but Donagh’s blog entry today put me in mind of this story for the first time in ages.

My brother, who was a pre-schooler at the time, had been having difficulties with pronounciation. My parents were concerned that this was an indication of a more deeply-rooted learning difficulty. So they took him to an expert to find out either way. This guy showed my brother picture cards and asked him to identify the image on each one. The first few went well, but my brother hesitated then at the sight of one.

“That’s an igloo”, said the expert, after a pause.

“No its not”, replied my brother with conviction.

“Well, why not?”, asked the expert.

“Because igloos would melt if they had chimneys”, came back the response.

My parents paid and left. As for the speech problem? Well, it went away in its own time.

  1. My nephew when he was a bit younger had a problem with certain letters and sounds, as kids do.

When he was 6, he was walking past when he heard a song on MTV.

    ‘That’s wank’ he said.

‘WHAT?!’ I replied disgusted and shocked.

He looked at me as you would an idiot and calmy said ‘It’s wank. Wank wotten.’

    :-)

  2. A perceptive kid with excellent taste! You should employ him at ELM Towers!

However, I would prefer it if you did not use unsavoury words on my blog.

I may need to get a widget that blocks comments that refer to MTV! :-)
